The simple two-hook flapper rig is one of the first multi-hook rigs
used by sea anglers when they take up the sport. It can be used from
boat or shore, although it’s most common to see it in use by shore
anglers from piers and breakwaters.
It’s a fairly close-range rig because in its basic state it’s not the best casting rig, but it presents baits so well that it is still popular. If anglers didn’t catch fish on it they wouldn’t use it.
This particular version uses quite big hooks – size 2/0 Tsunami Makos. These have a wide gape and are a good pattern for bulky baits such as squid or crab. They are sharp and strong and are a good pattern to use when you expect quality fish to be around. They are also a good pattern for venues where dogfish abound, as these hooks retain their points and their shapes and are easy to remove from the tough mouths of the doggies, making the rig last a bit longer.
